College application deadlines depend on the school and the plan you choose: early decision, early action, regular decision or rolling admission. California’s public universities keep things simpler, with one main fall deadline for each system.

Types of College Application Deadlines
- Early decision (ED): binding. If you’re admitted, you agree to attend and withdraw other applications. You can apply ED to only one school. Some colleges also offer a later ED II round.
- Early action (EA): nonbinding. You apply early, hear early and can still compare offers until May 1.
- Restrictive early action: nonbinding, but you generally can’t apply early to other private colleges at the same time. Stanford uses this plan.
- Regular decision: the standard deadline, usually in early to mid-January for private colleges.
- Rolling admission: applications are reviewed as they arrive until the class is full, so applying early helps.
UC Application Deadline
The UC application covers all nine undergraduate campuses. According to UC, you can start your fall application as early as August 1 and submit it during the filing period of October 1 to November 30. UC has no early decision or early action, so every first-year applicant for Fall 2027 faces the same November 30, 2026, deadline.

CSU Application Deadline
The CSU uses Cal State Apply. For Fall 2027, the priority application period runs from August 1 to November 30, 2026, and some sections of the application become available when submission begins on October 1. The CSU application fee is $70 per campus, and fee waivers are available.
The CSU notes that many campuses accept applications after the priority period, but not all do. If you’re applying to high-demand campuses such as San José State or Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, apply during the priority period to keep all your options open.

Private colleges set their own dates, and most use the Common App. Here are early deadlines at several California colleges we cover:

Financial Aid Deadlines
Admission and aid deadlines are separate. To be considered for Cal Grant and the Middle Class Scholarship, file the FAFSA or California Dream Act Application by California’s state deadline, which is typically March 2. Many private colleges also require the CSS Profile, often with deadlines close to their admission deadlines.
