For most California students, the college application process runs through three separate systems: the UC application (one form for all nine undergraduate UC campuses, with four 350-word Personal Insight Questions), Cal State Apply for the 22 CSU universities, and the Common App for most private colleges. For Fall 2027, UC and CSU applications are due November 30, 2026, and many private colleges have early deadlines on November 1.
The college application process isn’t one process. Requirements, essays, fees and deadlines differ by system and by school, so the smartest approach is to plan each system as its own checklist.

How to Build Your College List
A balanced list mixes reach, target and likely schools. For California students, that often means several UC campuses on one application, a few CSU campuses, a community college transfer plan as a backup, and any private colleges that fit academically and financially.
Use real admission data rather than reputation. UC acceptance rates for California residents ranged from about 22% at UC Irvine to about 97% at UC Merced for Fall 2025, and each campus’s Common Data Set shows what enrolled students’ GPAs looked like. Check cost of attendance and net price too.
Applying to UC
One UC application lets you apply to any or all nine undergraduate campuses. You’ll report your courses and grades yourself, list activities and awards, and answer four of eight Personal Insight Questions, each up to 350 words. UC doesn’t use SAT or ACT scores or recommendation letters for most applicants. California residents need at least a 3.0 GPA in A-G courses. Applying to CSU
Cal State Apply covers all 22 CSU universities, with a $70 fee per campus. California residents are eligible with a 2.50 or higher A-G GPA, and those with a 2.00 to 2.49 GPA may be considered based on other factors. Our take: The UC Personal Insight Questions are the one part of a UC application you fully control late in high school. Write about specific things you did and what they show about you, and reuse good material in your Common App essay where it fits.
Applying to Private Colleges
Most private colleges use the Common App, which includes a personal essay, an activities list and college-specific supplements. Most also ask for a counselor report and teacher recommendations, and some require or consider SAT or ACT scores. Early decision is binding; early action isn’t.
